Joy to Healthy Holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Joy to the World! Sure these are all lovely sentiments, in theory.  But so many of us have found the holiday season to just add to our normal every day stress, especially when it comes to food and what we eat.  Enjoying healthy holidays seems like it’s on everyone’s radar to try to do. Yet I always hear so many people lamenting how they over-induldged, again. How can we navigate the season and all the parties, stay healthy, and still manage to enjoy the true meaning of the season?

My suggestion to you is to take a moment to look at the bigger picture.  The holidays are NOT about FOOD!  When we get down to it, the holidays mean many things to many people. The true spirit behind this magical season has nothing to do with sugar cookies, apple pie, eggnog or peppermint mochas.

Imagine a holiday season where you left your food worries behind and spent your energy focusing on what truly matters.  Don’t get me wrong, what you eat matters a great deal. But when you create so much stress around it, it doesn’t matter how healthy you eat, stress is stress!  Stress, whether from a toxin in your food or a toxic thought pattern, is what is at the root of our diseases and illnesses.

So maybe this year, rather than trying to micromanage every bite of food and fret over whether there will be something you can eat at the party or restaurant, try shifting your focus to stress-reducing thoughts.  Let’s try focusing our attention on the gratitude we feel, the love for one another, cherishing the precious time with loved ones, celebrating life, the community we belong to, connecting with loved ones, and simply enjoying the magic in a child’s eye.

Find the JOY inside of you, not inside the food 😉
