One of the greatest assets I have had during my personal journey to optimal health has been creating and building my very own powerful healthcare team. This is the team of experts that serve as guides and mentors for me and my path towards optimal health. My health really began to turn around when I made the decision to take my healing into my own hands. I decided to stop relying solely on doctors and diagnoses as the end-all-be-all. Choosing to be the leader in my own healthcare has been the greatest decision I have ever made. By recognizing that no one has more answers for my own health than I do, I was able to take charge of my healthcare plan and begin to lead the experts and craft my personalized plan for optimal health.
In the past 5 years, I have worked with a handful of traditional medical doctors and a number of other less traditional practitioners and experts. Along with my general practitioner and gynecologist, I’ve sought guidance from chiropractors, massage and bodywork therapists, a Reiki practitioner, a cognitive behavioral therapist, a naturopath, and a nutrition consultant. Together, with me at the helm, I have achieved a level of health I never thought possible. It has given me the power and responsibility for my own health.
I want to share with you my steps on how to easily build your own powerful healthcare team! I do believe that this is one of the most important steps in living a healthful life. It doesn’t have to be rocket science either. Being proactive and taking responsibility for your own health will surely reap great rewards for you.
How to Easily Build a Powerful Healthcare Team
Step 1 – Get Clear
It’s important to begin by understanding what kind of guidance you are looking for. You wouldn’t go see the eye doctor if you were experiencing ringing in your ears, right? Start by identifying what you are struggling with, whether it is symptoms (ie. weight gain, bloating, headaches, trouble sleeping, joint pain, etc) or lifestyle modifications (ie. nutrition/eating healthier, exercise/movement, stress management, etc) or something else. Use this to create a list of goals that you want your powerful healthcare team to be able to help, support, and guide you with.
Next, you want to get clear on why you want help with these things. A huge part of building a powerful healthcare team is knowing that you are the leader. As the leader, you must know why this is important to you because it will help guide your team and it will provide you with motivation and inspiration when the path is challenging.
It’s important to consider your finances as well. Your healthcare team may consist of people in the role of chiropractor, acupuncturist, massage therapist, nutrition coach, personal trainer, etc. Unfortunately, the reality that we currently have in the United States means that health insurance most likely won’t cover everything that you need to build your powerful healthcare team. Having a general practitioner (GP) is always a good idea, but realistically, your team will expand far beyond your GP. Take a look at your finances and determine how much you are willing and able to invest in building your team. This may mean shifting priorities for a bit until you get your health where you want it or at least in a more desirable place.
The initial cost of working with someone new is always far greater than the cost to keep going, so plan and prepare and trust that it will get better. In the long run, the cost of preventative healthcare is always far less than the cost of “sick care”. Invest in your health – this is the only body & mind that you get!
Step 2 – Research
Once you’ve got the first part down, the next part is doing a little research. You want to take into consideration how much you are willing to budget and what type(s) or role(s) you want to add to your healthcare team based on your goals. The list of types of people that can help guide you on your own health journey is essentially limitless. I’ll list a few types here to give you ideas beyond what your basic medical team may be able to offer you. This list is certainly not finite.
Naturopath (ND), Functional Medicine Practitioner (FMP), Integrative Medicine Practitioner, Chiropractor (DC), Osteopath (DO), Ayurvedic Practitioner or Doctor, Chinese/Oriental Medicine or Acupuncturist. Herbalist, Massage or Bodywork Therapist, Holistic Dentist, Holistic Psychologist, Homeopath, Physical Therapist, Personal Trainer. Nutritionist or Nutrition Coach, Life Coach, Reiki Practitioner, Aromatherapist, Craniosacral Therapist, Energy Healer, and many more!
This may require research about what each of these professions does and I would definitely recommend talking to others for recommendations. If you are already seeing one of these people they are the perfect person to ask for a recommendation on another person to add to your healthcare team. Get online into a forum or facebook group and ask for recommendations based on your goals. Also, see the directories listed below for a quick way to find certified professionals in your area.
Keep in mind that sometimes people let their egos get in the way of providing you with the best care possible. If a practitioner seems offended that you want to add another person to your team, gently remind them of your goals and how you believe that another perspective and area of expertise will help you to achieve them more efficiently. If they still don’t seem onboard with the idea, it may be time to let that person go. A great practitioner will know their own limits and will want you to be the healthiest you can be, regardless of who helps you get there.
Step 3 – Interview
This part is often overlooked but very crucial for building your powerful healthcare team. Remember, you are the leader of your team! Just like any other leader building a team, you need to interview and try out a few different options to find the best fit for you and your goals. Most practitioners will offer some sort of brief free consultation. If they don’t advertise this, call their office and ask if you can chat for 10-15 minutes to answer a few questions.
This interview step is critical for 3 huge reasons. First, it gives you an opportunity to see how it feels to talk with this person. They are going to be helping you achieve your health & wellness goals so you want to make sure that you feel comfortable with them. Second, you want to address your goals and make sure you both feel like they will be able to help you make progress towards them. Third, make sure to discuss the financial investment of working with them and make sure that it fits with your goals.
By taking the time to address these 3 aspects before committing to working with someone, you will have a higher chance of success together. There is nothing like feeling blindsided by the cost of working with someone. Or finding out that they don’t really have any experience helping people with your goals.
I highly recommend interviewing a few options before making your choice. Remember, this person’s guidance is going to play a huge role in your journey so you want to feel really good about your decision!
Build your Team!
Finding a new expert for your team can be daunting and overwhelming, so take it one step at a time. Aim to keep an open mind to new techniques and methods of treatment. My healthcare team has evolved over the years. It hasn’t always maintained the same people as my goals and needs have continued to evolve. Keep this in mind as you are building your healthcare team. Remember that you are in charge! If something or someone doesn’t feel right for you, don’t be afraid to speak up. This is your body, your mind, and your life! You get to own the care that you put into it!
