Cherry Berry Smoothie

I’m a creature of habit. I like routines and I often find myself eating the same things over and over. It removes decision fatigue and creates predictability in a world that is incredibly unpredictable. I find a lot of peace in that. So while I greatly enjoy trying new foods and recipes, I also find great joy in repeating the same ones. For the past few months I’ve been enjoying alternating between two smoothies for my mornings: the Medical Medium Liver Rescue Smoothie and this Cherry Berry Smoothie!

I love the taste of tart cherries in the morning, something about it perks me right up. When combined with the spicyness of the ginger and the sweetness of the banana and date, I feel my engine revving and ready to take on the day!

According to Anthony William, “Cherries sharpen the mind by purifying the bowels – they’re better at alleviating constipation than prunes! Plus, cherries are one of the best endocrine-system-boosting foods, stimulating or supressing the appetite as needed.” (1)

Given my history with constipation, this explains why my body loves the taste of cherries so much! When paired with the wild blueberries and optional barley grass juice powder, this Cherry Berry Smoothie makes an excellent tonic for cleansing and rejuvenating the liver. What a great way to start the day!

Cherry Berry Smoothie

(AIP, Paleo, Whole30, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free)

Prep time: 5 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients

Directions

  • Place all the ingredients into your blender in the order listed
  • For the ginger root, start with a piece about the size of a blueberry. If you like more ginger taste you can work up to a larger piece. Even a small piece can have a pretty strong effect.
  • Blend until smooth, adding more coconut water if needed.
  • Enjoy with a spoon!
