How To Achieve Your Healthy Eating Goals

How To Achieve Your Healthy Eating Goals

As a Transformational Nutrition Coach, helping people achieve their healthy eating goals is a regular part of my work. I am very familiar with many of the strategies and tools that can be put into place to successfully assist people on their real food journey. Avoiding common pitfalls and mindset shifts are a big part of how I help clients find the success they are looking for.

As you turn the calendar to a new year, maybe you have some goals to finally make healthy eating a lifelong habit. Or maybe you are reading this months from now and are ready to make a change. These strategies to help you achieve your heatlhy eating goals are good all year round! Let’s dive in!

7 Strategies to Achieve Your
Healthy Eating Goals

1. Start Meal Planning

It is so easy to stray off course without a plan. When you start meal planning, not only will you feel more empowered and in control, you will also save money and time at the grocery store. I can’t rave enough about how helpful meal planning can be when you are getting used to using new ingredients (hello, vegetables!) and spending more time preparing your own meals. A nutrition coach can help you set up a good plan for your goals or you can utilize an online service, like Real Plans, where automation will help save you time!

2. Spring Clean Your Kitchen

Don’t leave those frankenfoods hiding in the back of the cupboard to tempt you. When you are ready to make a real change you will know that you have no desire to go back to where you have been. So there is no need to hold on to all of those packaged and processed foods that you won’t be consuming anymore. Bag them up and donate them to a local food bank. Clear out space in your kitchen for all of the nutritious alternatives that you will be bringing in! I highly recommend scheduling a 2-3 hour time block to bang this out right away!

3. Restock With Real Food Essentials

Now that you’ve made all that space in your kitchen, it’s time to restock with some healthier alternatives! Don’t let yourself get stuck without some of the most-used real food essentials. Stock up on all organic items like: extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, fresh herbs and spices, raw honey, apple cider vinegar, and raw nuts or seeds.  These will help keep you on track and prepared to make some delicious and nutrition meals with your fresh produce and quality meats & seafood. I love using Thrive Market to stock up on these goodies because they are priced less than the grocery store and I can have them delivered to my home for free!

4. Rethink Snacks

Snacks are a common pitfall becuase we are so well-trained to reach for a convenience food item instead of a real food item. The best way to handle this is to be prepared with real food options! A real food snack can be just as convenient as a fresh apple or banana or cucumber or baby carrots. If you want to go beyond fresh fruits and vegetables, you can try batch-cooking some real food muffins, prepping smoothie packs in your freezer, or portioning out leftovers into containers for easy access. If you know that you snack often make sure that you have a plan for the whole week. Don’t let your hunger side track you into making a less than optimal food choice.

5. Know Yourself Better

The best way to set and achieve goals is by taking the time to make sure they align with who you are. Having a plan that matches your personality and way of doing things is much more likely to succeed than something that worked for someone else. Healthy eating goals are meant to be a lifelong change, not something you do just once. Therefore, they need to be sustainable and the plan needs to feel good for you. Do you like to dive in head first or do you prefer to baby step you way through big change? Make sure that you adjust your plan to match your way of approaching change. This is huge! Don’t try to force yourself to be someone you aren’t because you will end up sabotaging your progress.

6. Understand Your Tendency for Expectations

I love Gretchen Rubin’s work on the Four Tendencies and how we approach inner and outer expectations. This is such a helpful tool in aiding people who are trying to improve their goal success rate. Take a minute to take her quick Four Tendencies quiz and then come back here with your results!

You can use your tendency to help you navigate your healthy eating goals:

  • Upholders: Set a clear goal and plan for yourself, follow the tips in this post, and you should be golden!
  • Questioners: I highly recommend picking up a book on the benefits of eating real food. Understanding why avoiding processed/packaged foods is beneficial for you and your goals will help you stay on track. Practical Paleo and Liver Rescue are two great places to start.
  • Obligers: Find an accountability partner! This can be a coach, a friend, or a family member. Bonus points if they make the changes with you! Having someone who will hold you accountable to your goals and plan will prove to be priceless.
  • Rebels: Get clear on how your healthy eating goals relate to your identity. Do you identify as someone who takes care of themselves? Or maybe you want to be a healthy role model? Understanding how your healthy eating goals support your desired identity will help you choose to actively work towards them.

7. Get Some Guidance

Sometimes we need a little extra help. That’s ok. Maybe this is the same goal you’ve had for years and yet here it is again, with little to no progress having been made.
